Barreling along to #34

So now we confront what probably started this whole 23 things, etc.. in the first place! The library, as a physical place, has a (pick your answer) partner or enemy - the internet! The online answer site could be appealing because I can ask my question and don't have to feel stupid! The person who answers my question won't see my Mom at church that night or at the meeting later in the week. It's not that I don't trust my librarian....welll, maybe I don't! Is my question one that might be considered not worth asking or maybe silly? Doesn't matter online - I won't hear the laughter! The delete button is helpful too. (I can't delete the lady behind the counter!) Yes, I'm being ornery. The kinds of questions I read are spurring me on! Who protects govt. leaders? The answers were all over the place - some even based on TV shows! Yikes! I certainly hope we don't believe everything we read on our computer screens! Personally, I don't think the questions I saw would be asked of a librarian. They are simply a sign of our times. People are lonely and instead of going out and interacting with their neighbors, they are choosing to surf the net in a variety of ways. Throw out a question and see who answers back and what they say. This is not a library phenomenon! This is a mark of our society! One of the articles I read spoke of the noise and activity in a library. I go to the library because of the books, but it's also fun to hang out because of the people! The Slam the Board is intriguing to me. I would not participate but find it interesting that some feel the need to. Maybe they read the same ridiculous answers I did and became sincerely worried about the gullability (is that even a word?) of our society!! Now they can prove how truly stupid the rest of us are and set us straight! My Jr. High librarian was good at that too. And she was scary.......

I get that you've had some bad experiences with librarians. Me too. which is how I ended up doing this; vowed never to let happen to another what happened to me. I saw it happen to others who just quit using the library rather than speak up and solve the problem. But you do get tired out...I really like the points you made in your post. Saw a Twitter just recently about librarians being judgmental about people's reading choices by a fellow library worker who was incensed by that conduct. So there's more of us around. Take heart.
