Travel fun @ #33

I really liked this thing! I checked out Kugelhopf's blog and enjoyed it quite a bit. This whole idea isn't new to me though. I remember stumbling across a blog with a similar theme back in 2001. It was called "A Man in a Suitcase" and was a really funny and informative blog. I think we are just making these things "official" - giving them some credibility. Crazy how we are realizing what we already knew - if you want to really know about someplace, talk to someone who has been there! duh! Back to the thing - Virtual Tourist was almost too busy for me. Lots of ads, etc... - guess I prefer a cleaner page. (picky!) I am really intrigued by Mapness. Of course, I'm the mom who had her kids keep a journal every time we went on a trip. This is the same idea online. What a great resource for a field trip - even if you don't go very far, it would still be useful to use this. It encourages writing about your experience and could be a great opportunity to figure distance, mph, quickest route etc... . I also checked out the tubejournal thing - once again, what I would get in picking up a paper map once I got there can now be viewed online. We are so all about instant info! All in all, what a great project for kids: plan your dream vacation. Using mapness and some of the blogs, etc.. , students could start with a budget, plan their trip figuring miles, meals, and lodging, and journal about the adventure. A virtual vacation! Cool stuff!
